Thoughts on the SBC
Just got back from San Antonio today. Some miscellaneous thoughts on the city, and the convention... San Antonio was not what I expected. It is not nearly as modern or wealthy as other Texas cities, such as Dallas or Houston. The city has more of a historic feel to it. It was neat to see the Alamo, and the Riverwalk was very cool... Frank Page did a great job of moderating the convention. He was presidential. Loving, but firm... Al Mohler may be the most influential voice in Southern Baptist life. Everytime he took the platform, he seemed to resonate with the messengers on a higher plane than anyone else... Mohler and Roberts (I didn't hear the other seminary presidents) made very clear the messengers' vote on the sufficiency of the Baptist Faith & Message (as a guide for our entities), will not alter the way they do business at their respective institutions. I don't know if anyone is that concerned with the seminaries at this point and time. I think the motion was clearly aimed at recent IMB policies on tongues and baptism. Will this affect IMB policy? That remains to be seen. I don't think anyone is real clear on the impact this measure will have. Some may be upset if the IMB policies don't change after this was voted on. I think the intepretation of this vote will be the center of debate in Southern Baptist life for the next year... I have now heard Ed Stetzer speak on multiple occasions. He is clearly crazy (in a good way), but he is a genius when it comes to his area of expertise (church planting and evangelism). I also believe he represents the most balanced and accurate voice in Southern Baptist life on the "emerging church."... What are your thoughts on the convention?
